How to Make a Wrapped Round Start

PHOTO-COILING 1 This is a movie instruction, with audio (sound), demonstrating how to make a wrapped round start. (Quick Time movie, 1.34mb) Depending upon what programs you have on your computer, the movie may load automatically in the window below, and start to play in a loop (over and over). If this does not happen, please read the message at the bottom of the page for help.

The photo at left shows how to hold pine needles and binder to begin. I am using three capped long leaf needles. You may want to use more or less, depending upon the thickness and suppleness of your needles. These needles have been prepared by soaking in warm water until they are flexible. This is only necessary for the "start" of the basket, and indeed, it is possible to only soak the ends of the needles.

I am using artificial sinew, which is very strong and slightly waxy. This is the binder I prefer, and what I recommend for beginners.

Gently bend the wrapped pine needles in the center of the wrapped portion, over the end of your thumb if need be. Then grasp both ends (leaving the bent portion free), and wrap again around the two ends several times.

Pierce this last section you wrapped, making sure you go through both sides, and you have made a loop.

These videos were each 15 seconds. So you see it takes only 45 seconds to start a round, wrapped basket.

Then click of the link below to see the subsequent (2) movies, of approximately the same size.

Go on to the second step in your Wrapped Round Start

-----------Give the movie a couple of minutes to load...it may load very slowly, and show a few photos and just a couple of words at a time. But if you are getting it at all, you will have a photo and the page will not say "done" down at the bottom. After it loads completely, it will "loop", and you will hear and see it smoothly. If the movie does not load and play, try clicking the photo above left, to open the movie in a separate window. Sorry, folks, I am not an expert at this stuff. This page works in Internet Explorer 5, without extra plugins....I had to remove my RealOne Player in order to have it play!----------------------
